Servingness 2.0

Overview

The Multidimensional Conceptual Framework for Understanding Servingness provided a framework for Hispanic-Serving Institutions to envision an organizational approach to adequately serving Latine students (Garcia et al., 2019). In 2024 the HEART Lab began updating the original framework, analyzing all HSI articles published between 2018 and 2024. Servingness 2.0, a revised framework based on a systematic literature review, helps scholars and practitioners approach organizational change. The framework reveals the dynamics and reciprocity that exist between the structures for serving and the indicators of serving, while exposing the friction between the servingness processes (e.g., actions taken to move towards servingness), the peripheral structures (e.g., intermediary forces between the institution and the environment), and the external influences, including systems of oppression.

The Servingness 2.0 Framework reminds us that servingness is an action-oriented movement within the organization that centers the identities of Latine students while responding to challenges shaped by internal and external pressures. Members of the HEART Lab presented the study at the 2025 Association for the Study of Higher Education annual conference and will publish the findings soon.
